Myopia Control
Myopia Control
Myopia Control is the process of trying to slow down or even stop the progression of myopia.
Why is this important?
With every increase in myopic power you increase the risk of certain eye diseases, so it is better for the long term health and visual function of the eye to not be short sighted. A -1.25 prescription is twice a likely to have a retinal detachment as an eye with a prescription of 0.00. A -6.00 prescription is 16x more likely to have a retinal detachment and 40x more likely to have macula degenerative disease than a prescription of 0.00.
How can you control
the progress of myopia in a young eye?
OrthoK-this is a rigid contact lens that is worn over night and reshapes the eye back to “zero”. This as been shown to be the most effective way to slow/stop myopic progression and has the added benefit that no contact lenses are worn during the day.
Certain multifocal contact lenses (daily replacement or monthly replacement) have been designed to slow myopic progression effectively. (click on the Misight link for their statistics). Certain spectacle lens designs have been made to again slow the myopic shift and since 2020 there are new designs coming out almost on a monthly basis
All of these options are available from us and have been available from us for many years. Whilst it is impossible to “not be short sighted anymore” it is much better for the eye to be a -2.00 than a -6.00.
