Standard eye tests are available routinely for both Private and NHS clients.
Being an independent practice we have personally chosen all the frames and sunglasses that we stock. By keeping the styles new and fresh we hope to maintain your individuality as we rarely sell the same designer frame in the same colour twice, no one likes to turn up to a party in the same outfit as other people!

Our range of frames start from £16, free to those with NHS exemption, even our designer frames start from just £72.

The designer ranges we carry include Starck, Feb 31st, Tom Davies (both hand made frames), Mad in Italy, Oliver Peoples , Silhouette, Etnia Barcelona and more.

Also we stock the largest range of designer and technical sunglasses (Bolle for sports, Serengeti for driving) in the area. Indeed many of these can be made into prescription sunglasses, even the wrap around styles.

Our lenses are sourced from several reputable prescription houses, depending on the optical requirements of the patient. Because we do not have to promote one lens designer above another, we can offer our customers a wide choice of branded lenses from innovative manufacturers such as ESSILOR, KODAK, NIKON, PENTAX, RODENSTOCK, SEIKO, ZEISS or our more reasonably priced non branded products.

Apart from prescribing spectacles we also have a thriving contact lens business.

As an ACUVUE CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE we are able to get the latest products from Acuvue for you, before the rest of the opticians in the region.

However we do supply all other manufacturers including BAUSCH & LOMB, CIBA VISION, COOPERVISION, SAUFLON and THOMPSONS. This enables us to source the most appropriate lens for you, as we are not limited to one supplier.

Alex Surtees – Optometrist

Alex was born in Bermuda in 1971, but raised in Weston Super Mare. He studied Optometry at Bradford University and qualified in 1993 with a 2:1 Bsc Hons. Alex is registered with the UK General Optical Council and was also on the Registration Board of New South Wales, having worked just north of Sydney in the 90’s. After moving to Yorkshire Alex opened Alexander Optometrists in 2004 because he wanted to offer the quality and service that he feels only an independent practice can. Alex married Sam in 1996 and has a son, Joseph born 2005 and a daughter Hannah born in 2007. Apart from his family, Alex’s two great loves are travel and gastronomy.

Sam Surtees- Optometrist

Sam is Alex’s wife, they met at Bradford University while studying Optometry. She worked with Alex in Australia that started their mutual love of travel. Sam ran her own Specsavers franchise for 11 years before joining Alex in their practice in 2014; definitely preferring the environment of independent practice. Apart from the family, travel and food; Sam’s hobbies are fitness classes and a love of animals, she is a volunteer at the cats protection league and says the most unusual animal she has ever seen was a Zonkey whilst in Tanzania.

Pauline Stuckey - Optometrist

Pauline is originally from Australia, actually working in the same centre in New South Wales as Alex (but not at the same time). Pauline is married to Matt and has two children. Pauline has worked in Yorkshire for many years and started with Alex in 2019. Pauline’s great passions (after her family) are food and travel, which is one reason she fits in so well at the practice.

Simon Sykes - Dispensing Optician

Simon was born in York (one day after Alex was born) and started in the optical industry on his 21st birthday. Simon has been qualified since 1997.
Simon married Ruth in 1997 and has two boys, Noah born 2002 and Joel born in 2005. Both of his sons have represented England at volleyball and Simon has probably visited every sports hall in the country as they have progressed.
He likes to spend his time reading (often in sports hall carparks!), walking his rescue dog and travelling.

Madison Kitchen - Dispensing Optician/trainee Contact Lens Optician

Madison started her optical career with Alex in 2019 and qualified in 2022 as a dispensing optician after completing the BSc distance learning diploma aged just 21. Alex continues to sponsor her education as she takes on the contact lens diploma, so she can help the practice grow it’s already large contact lens database Madison is Northallerton born and bred, bought her first house in 2021 and has adopted two cats. Her main passions are dancing, starting ballet in 2004 and then moving to contemporary in 2012.

She loves the theatre and can often be seen on the Saturday afternoon train to London to catch an evening performance.

Kaitlyn Holmes - Trainee Dispensing Optician

Kaitlyn started in optics in 2017, joined Alex in 2021 and beginning the dispensing optician course in 2022. She was born in Nottingham in 1998 and moved to Northallerton to be near family when she was 11. Her passions include reading, horse riding and music. She is never too far away from a festival!
